24/08/07: Old Cats unveil Youth Academy

Old Cats has unveiled a new Youth Academy for the coming season to provide specialised training to help develop youngsters.

The Academy encompasses all youth sides from under-13 to under-18. The Academy runs on a Thursday evening with combined skills training from qualified coaches. “This will hopefully ensure a smooth and natural transition through the youth age groups and onto the senior game,” said Academy manager Steve Dalgleish. “The hope is also to include two girls youth teams in the Academy this year.” The sessions kick-off at the start of September and anyone is welcome. “These summer sessions would be an ideal taster for anyone interested in the game but not sure of their commitment or fitness at the moment,” said Dalgleish.

Last season, the club played more games and scored more points than ever before. It is a club for all ages from minis rugby (5+) to running five youth age groups as well as a Colts (U-19) and a U-21 side. The seniors run three sides plus a women’s team. The Cats senior teams kick off their season at the Combined London Old Boys tournament on 1 September. “We will be hoping to repeat our success of 2004 and 2005 when we won the tournament,” said captain Jon Delicata. “Training has been going well so far.”

Meanwhile, the women’s team held their training day three weeks ago. “It was a huge success and we are raring to go for the new season,” said captain Fiona Tamplin.
